30 pupils from St George's British International School participate in the Royal Russell International Model United Nations conference in London.
From 17th to 23rd October, 30 of our students from various year levels, from Year 10 to 2º of Bachillerato, had the opportunity to participate in the Royal Russell School International Model United Nations (MUN) conference in London. This conference brought together over 500 students from 39 schools across nine countries, providing a platform for young minds to engage in diplomatic discussions and debates on global issues.
During the conference, each student had a unique role to play. Alfonso, from 2º of Bachillerato, served as a Chair in the Disarmament committee. Naroa, Year 12 student, acted as a Judge in the International Court of Justice, presiding over the case of Nauru vs Australia concerning mining rights.Tarika (Year 11) and Izan (Year 10) were on the Press Team and wrote articles for the daily newspaper as well as writing a Newsletter about the trip.
Delegates in Action
The remaining students were divided into delegations representing different countries such as Argentina, Austria, Finland, Italy, and Peru. These delegates participated in nine committees, engaging in debates on various resolutions related to global challenges. Two delegates even had their resolutions selected for discussion, with one failing and one passing to the General Assembly, highlighting their exceptional research and preparation skills.
One standout student, Beatriz from Year 10, was chosen to join the Crisis Committee to address an emerging global crisis scenario, where certain countries were attempting to start their equivalent of NATO. This unique opportunity allowed her to navigate diplomatic challenges and work collaboratively with delegates from other countries to find solutions.
Martin (Year 10) was selected twice to speak at the General Assembly. He delivered one Point of Information and one speech in favor of a resolution, showcasing his leadership and public speaking skills.
In addition to the academic activities, all our students had a wonderful time sightseeing in London, watching a talent show, and attending three discos.
Insight into Global Affairs
MUN provides students with a hands-on simulation of how the United Nations operates, giving them a deeper understanding of international relations and global issues. By representing different countries and advocating for their policies, students develop critical thinking, negotiation, and public speaking skills.
Participating in MUN conferences goes beyond academic learning. It fosters personal growth by encouraging students to adopt perspectives different from their own, promoting empathy, understanding, and open-mindedness. Engaging in debates and negotiations also hones their leadership and teamwork abilities.
Attending the Royal Russell School International Model United Nations conference was a transformative experience for the students. It not only broadened their horizons but also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards global issues. MUN empowers young delegates to be proactive global citizens, ready to tackle the challenges of the future. “It’s really enjoyable and interesting, I recommend it to people interested in law. So this is a good way to develop skills.”
