The Journey: St. George's British International School's Outdoor Learning Programme

Last month, the students from Year 2, Year 3, and Year 4 had a unique and enriching experience as part of the outdoor learning program, The Journey. This initiative, which fosters the development of key skills outside the classroom, took the students to the beautiful surroundings of Butrón Castle, on a day filled with discovery, exploration, and fun.

During the day, our Georgians embarked on a several-kilometer journey through the area, immersing themselves in stunning natural landscapes and surrounded by an environment that sparked their curiosity and sense of adventure. As they walked, they observed the local flora and fauna, learned about the ecosystem around them, and experienced a direct connection with nature. Without a doubt, it was a day when learning went beyond books and blackboards, allowing the students to explore the world in an active way.

At the same time, Year 8 students embarked on their own adventure by reaching the summit of Pagasarri. The effort of the hike, combined with the reward of panoramic views from the top, allowed them to reflect on the importance of resilience, perseverance, and teamwork. Upon reaching the summit, they were able to admire the vast landscape unfolding before them, which deepened their appreciation for the natural environment and gave them a sense of shared accomplishment.

The Journey: Fostering Outdoor Learning

The Journey is much more than a series of excursions. This comprehensive programme, integrated into the curriculum, is designed to provide students with an active educational experience connected to the natural world, where learning goes beyond traditional curriculum content. Its goal is to foster curiosity, creativity, teamwork and, above all, a connection to the natural environment, while the knowledge acquired through this experience is later applied to curriculum subjects and vice versa.

Throughout the programme, students engage in various outdoor activities, ranging from walks and explorations of local flora and fauna to orienteering challenges, survival tasks, and team problem-solving. Through these experiences, students develop key skills such as resilience, effective communication, decision-making and leadership. Additionally, the connection with nature allows them to reflect on sustainability and the impact of our actions on the environment.

This educational approach is strongly rooted in the idea that learning is deeper and more meaningful when experienced actively. Students not only learn about the world around them, but also feel part of it, promoting an attitude of respect and care for the environment. At the same time, outdoor learning fosters greater concentration, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being.

Students are involved both physically and mentally, which helps them develop greater self-confidence and a sense of responsibility. Furthermore, group activities strengthen social relationships and the sense of community—essential elements for the personal and academic growth of the younger students.

The Importance of Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning is a fundamental part of our school’s educational approach, as it provides students with the opportunity to engage physically, mentally, and socially in activities that promote their holistic development. These days of exploration are an excellent way to cultivate key skills such as resilience, collaboration and problem-solving in a natural setting. Moreover, these experiences promote curiosity and a deeper understanding of sustainability—critical aspects of the modern world.

The moments of interaction between peers of different ages also strengthen the bonds within the school community. Students learn to support one another, communicate effectively, and enjoy the discovery process together. Through this shared experience, they not only expand their knowledge but also create memories that will last throughout their personal and academic development.

The Journey highlights the importance of providing our Georgians with experiences that allow them to connect with the world around them, promoting active learning that goes beyond traditional classrooms. In this sense, the day at Butrón Castle or the climb up Pagasarri are clear examples of how learning can be an enriching adventure, filled with lessons and moments of enjoyment, both for the students and the teachers who accompanied them. “The students not only enjoy each activity tremendously, but we are also amazed at how, without even realizing it, they acquire new knowledge while having fun,” explain the teachers.

Commitment to Sustainability and the Future

The Journey programme also places special emphasis on sustainability and respect for the environment. Through outdoor activities, students learn about the importance of preserving nature, through concrete actions such as waste collection or respectful observation of ecosystems. This approach fosters a conscious and responsible attitude toward the planet, which is vital for addressing the environmental challenges of the future.

Undoubtedly, these days reinforce our school’s commitment to promoting sustainability, curiosity, and respect for the environment—values essential for shaping young people who are committed to the future. The outdoor adventure is not just a way to enjoy nature, but also an invaluable educational tool that prepares students for the challenges of today’s world.

These kinds of initiatives remind us that learning can and should be an enriching experience in every sense. Teachers emphasize that what matters is not just the concepts students learn, “but the bonds and memories they create, generating a very special sense of camaraderie.”
