Naroa and Malko, two students of the first IGCSE promotion of O Castro British International School, recognised by the External Examination Board.
Last June, our first promotion of IGCSE students successfully completed a key stage in the educational journey of our Georgians. This September, they embarked on the final stage of their schooling: Sixth Form, the equivalent of the Spanish Bachillerato in the British educational system.
This success was further highlighted by the recognition from Pearson’s External Examination Board to two of our students, Naroa and Malko, who received academic awards for their outstanding performance in last summer's IGCSE exams. Both were recognised with special mentions for their exceptional achievements at the European level."It’s great that our effort has been recognized with these mentions," says Naroa. Furthermore, being internationally recognized is a great help when applying to universities around the world, "as it demonstrates our effort and level," adds Malko.
Naroa stood out by being part of an exclusive group of students who achieved more than five subjects at Level 9, the highest in the new Pearson 9-1 grading scale. This grade, recently introduced by the UK government, provides a more precise differentiation between students and recognises outstanding performance.
Meanwhile, Malko achieved the highest grade in French across all schools in Europe, an impressive feat that reflects his dedication and effort. This recognition highlights the quality of the British education system and the level of excellence attained by its students.
The British Education System: External Assessment and Global Standards
The British education system is characterised by external assessment, where Secondary (IGCSE) and Sixth Form (A-Levels) exams are administered by external examining bodies such as Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International Examinations. This structure allows for standardised and objective assessment, ensuring that qualifications are comparable and recognised worldwide."They are very demanding exams, and since they are not graded by our teachers, but by external assessors, they are accepted anywhere in the world," explain Malko and Naroa.
Students from all over the world sit the same exams, guaranteeing fair and consistent evaluation. This ensures that qualifications hold the same value globally, providing students with international credibility.
Furthermore, boards such as Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge issue official certificates that acknowledge academic performance. These certificates are highly valued and recognised by universities and employers worldwide. These boards will award prizes to the most outstanding students globally, regionally, and nationally, celebrating their exceptional performance.
Grading Scale
The grading system for Pearson Edexcel IGCSE uses the 9-1 scale, replacing the old letter grades. This new scale allows for clearer differentiation between students:
- 9: The best performance, outstanding.
- 8: Very good performance, above grade A.
- 7: Excellent performance, comparable to A.
- 6: Very good performance, comparable to B.
- 5: Good performance, above grade C.
- 4: Pass, equivalent to C.
- 3: Low pass, similar to D.
- 2: Fail, below pass level.
- 1: Well below pass level.
- U: Unclassified (fail).
The British qualifications system offers fair and standardised assessment, providing students with global recognition of their achievements. The recent awards given to Naroa and Malko are a clear example of how effort and dedication result in exceptional achievements. "They are not easy exams and require a lot of effort on our part, as well as from our teachers to prepare us," explain both students. We congratulate both students and their teachers on their impressive results, and we are confident that these awards will serve as motivation for them to continue reaching new goals in the future.
This system not only ensures impartial evaluation but also opens doors to the best educational and professional opportunities worldwide.
